Le Roi David, Honegger

This review is about the (public) general rehearsal of "Le Roi David" (by Honegger) held in the Usher Hall on Monday 18 August 2008, just hours before the performance. The orchestra (RNSO) under the masterly conduction of Stéphane Denève, performed brilliantly. Soloists and narrators were amazing. The enthusiasm of Stéphane Denève seemed to energize the chorus, which sounded rather good. Pronunciation of the French language was of a reasonable standard, although far from perfect, as could have been expected from an 'International Chorus'. A little detail made the whole thing quite hilarious however. The presence of a funny little man - a rather flamboyant character visibly suffering from 'lollipop head syndrome', who spent the rehearsal fussing around the concert hall, occasionally addressing the chorus, as if he was indispensable. Was he the Chorus Master?

Dmtri Hvorostovsky

Well, I'm not too surprised no-one has submitted a review yet. The Usher Hall had so many seats empty on the night - why? I don't understand when somebody of Hvorostovsky's stature appears - and with seats available at such low prices. Why the lack of interest - wasn't it advertised well enough ?!?

I wonder if Hvorostovsky was perhaps a little offended - he didn't seem too engaged in his own performance initially. However, this was a recital of quality and depth all the way through. No fill-in, lightweight pieces as I've seen in other recitals. No fluff - just Dmitri singing with intensity, sensitivity and power - for almost two hours. These pieces demanded much of the pianist too, and he didn't disappoint.

Hvorostovsky was magnificent. His performance was very moving - even overwhelming. By the time we reached the Rachmaninov section I had dissolved into tears.

Meantime, people were leaving, (presumably to catch trains ?) during the encores ! Empty seats, a strangely subdued audience response and early departures - surely Hvorostovsky deserved better.
